How to Clean Carpet Tiles
- Vacuum the entire area. This will pick up dust and dirt which might otherwise turn into problematic mud when you start cleaning up specific stains.
- Target your problem areas. Use sticky notes to mark areas that need additional work. This will help ensure that you don’t miss anything while you’re working. Problem areas are areas with major soiling generally excessive wear.
- Mix a cleaning solution. Combine 3 cups of water and cup of mild detergent in a spray bottle. Once the lid is on tightly shake it up to mix.
- Scrape any crusted materials off the carpet. This will minimize the actual scrubbing you have to do will lessen the likelihood that your cleaning will exacerbate the problem rather than fix it.
- Remove the problem tiles from the area. Carpet tiles fit into place much like a jigsaw puzzle. Pull them out by grabbing the edges and lifting. They will leave a neat hole.
- Treat the carpet tiles' stains. Spray them with the mild detergent mixture, or use pre-purchased carpet shampoos. Blot and dab the stains with the cleaning rags. If you have a serious issue, scrub with the nylon brush. Only scrub, however, if everything else has failed.
- Rinse the carpet tiles thoroughly. Use clean, saturated cleaning rags to make sure all the detergent or soap is gone. You can also rinse the carpet tiles in the sink.
- Let the tiles dry completely. It is very important not to put damp tiles back into your carpet because this can cause mold and mildew. You can hasten the drying process with a hair dryer, but usually simply placing the tiles in a warm, dry place for several hours should do the trick.
- Replace the carpet tiles. Put them back into place by lowering them into the spots they left and pushing down the edges so the carpet is perfectly even.
